At night, I’d take the train into the city. During the day, I’d treat my time in high school as work I’d clock in and clock out, making little eye contact, keeping my head down. Undeterred, I spent as much time as possible there, or wherever else shows were happening around Chicagoland. I made sure to hide that tidbit from my parents.Īs a teen, Trohman struggled to fit in with his rich North Shore peers, but he had a “support system” in punk rock. Then, postshow, I exited the venue to see that the same green sedan also had a blast - it had been firebombed. I don’t even recall who I saw play that night, but I know I had a blast at the gig. My first show at the Bowl, I remember walking past a green sedan parked outside. Part of me looks back and thinks, Maybe that wasn’t very responsible? But the other part is sincerely grateful for the trust they bestowed on me. It’s not that my parents didn’t know that was the case, but to what extent? Yet they clearly felt I could handle myself. Keep in mind that at that time, around 2000, the area in Logan Square surrounding the Fireside Bowl was not yet the yuppie, button-down belt it is today, as it was overrun with gangs and violence. And somehow, I gained my parents’ trust, just enough that they would allow me to traverse Chicago’s public transit on my own. The moment I turned 15, I began to seek out shows in the city. This venue was where all the best punk and hardcore bands would play - Dillinger Four, Refused, Buried Alive, Converge, Cave In … I can’t keep count of all the amazing shows I saw during the Fireside’s tenure. The derelict space held around 500 people, meaning that by today’s standards, it probably shouldn’t hold more than 50 safely. The Fireside was a dilapidated bowling alley that at the time was not functioning primarily as a bowling alley. To me, the Fireside Bowl was Chicago’s CBGB, our quintessential, ramshackle punk venue that hosted performances by some of the most influential artists of the genre. I began to see the North Shore and rural Ohio as two sides of the same homogenous, boring coin, full of people too self-involved and uninterested in building a broader community. While my family had eked our way from a staunchly middle-class lifestyle to this glossier upper-middle class, I could not identify with the type of überwealth these rich kids dragged along everywhere they went, like specters rattling their chains of affluence in my face. I realized it was futile to think I could make any headway in punk or hardcore on the North Shore. It was clear that if this was the new standard, it might be better if we just stopped doing whatever it was we thought we were doing. Outside of making abysmal music, we mostly listened to Hatebreed, a Connecticut hardcore band that had recently released what would become a classic album, Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire. We recorded a demo tape, something I have intentionally lost and hope to never recover. Available from Hachette Books, an imprint of Hachette Book Group Inc. I had the “pleasure” of starting my first band with some of these moonlighters, a hardcore group called Voices Still Heard - a generic name with zero meaning.Įxcerpted from None of This Rocks: A Memoir by Joe Trohman. Sure, some dabbled in punk, but they preferred to retreat to their parents’ quasi mansions to throw pseudoparties with other brats, less interested in the Vandals and more interested in knowing where the vodka was being kept. With the “new kid” sheen dulled and no friends to count, I fell back on the only support system I had: punk rock.īy sophomore year of high school, I had become accustomed to the North Shore brats. When they tried to talk to me, I would have an internal parts breakdown, unable to compute the complex theories of “flirt,” “talk,” or “Just say something, man!” So I stuttered my way toward week two of middle school, organically shifting from intriguing and potentially kissable to fully weird and ignorable. Real-life girls! Now, this was frightening because I feared the opposite sex greatly. Was he cool? Was he smart? Was he suave? Was he good at rollerblading? I was none of these, but I tried to live in this moment of pseudo-popularity for as long as it would last. No one wanted to fart on me while proclaiming, “Gas chamber!”įor one hot minute I was not an outcast but an interesting curiosity: the new kid. And for the first time in my life, I was surrounded by other Jews. We now lived a stone’s throw from a real, major city, a place with no shortage of culture. It took me less than a week to realize that Winnetka, where my family moved when I was in sixth grade, was a significant upgrade from small-town Ohio. The Fe-Co DACs were synthesized by a two-step impregnation method in dual-solvent, as shown in Fig. The DACs cathodes exhibit the high specific discharge capacity of 1001 mAh g −1 and excellent cycle stability with a low decay rate per cycle of 0.018% at 1 C for 1000 cycles. In addition, DFT calculation demonstrates that the formation of Fe-Co atomic bond leads to charge redistribution between two atoms, which promotes the adsorption of LiPSs, significantly enhances the adsorption ability and improves the catalytic effect. As a result, the diatomic catalyst show excellent bifunctional catalytic effect during charge and discharge process. The isolated Fe-Co pairs are clearly observed by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field STEM (HAADF-STEM), and the (Fe-Co-N 6) structure is also demonstrated by synchrotron-radiation X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), indicating that Fe-Co DACs are successfully synthesized and inherit the advantages of fully exposing the active center and maximum atomic utilization of SACs. Herein, we accurately synthesize the diatomic catalyst (DACs) with Fe-Co dual sites anchored on hollow carbon spheres (Fe-Co DACs) through a two-step solvent impregnation method, which are used as the sulfur host material for the cathode of Li-S batteries. The double active sites are not only a simple doubling of a single atom, they have different catalytic characteristics, and there may be a synergistic effect to break through the theoretical limit of SACs. Introducing an additional metal center into SACs to form a double active sites is a promising strategy to solve the above problems 29, 30, 31. The formation and decomposition of Li 2S are two reverse oxidation and reduction processes. However, unlike other electrocatalytic reactions, the charging and discharging process of Li-S batteries is a reversible redox process. Our previous work also demonstrated that the unsaturated coordination Fe-N 2 site has higher catalytic activity than Fe-N 4 site 28. In addition, adjusting the species of coordination elements and coordination number of metal atoms can also improve the catalytic capacity of SACs 25, 26, 27. 24 compared different transition metal SACs (Fe, Co and Ni) and found that Fe-SACs have the strongest adsorption capacity for LiPSs. Niu and co-workers reported that graphene supported Ni single atom catalyst with M-N-C structure has excellent catalytic effect on the reduction of LiPSs to Li 2S 20, 21, 22, 23. Recently, single metal atomic catalysts (SACs) have been widely used as novel and efficient catalysts in ORR, NRR and other electrocatalysis fields with nearly 100% atomic utilization, high mass activity and unprecedented catalytic activity, and show enormous application potential 16, 17, 18, 19. Reducing catalyst size is a recognized and effective strategy to improve catalytic activity. However, the traditional metal based heterogeneous catalyst materials cannot fully expose their active sites, resulting in a low atomic utilization and limited catalytic effect. Therefore, many polar catalyst materials 8, 9, 10, 11 (MoS 2, Co 4N, FeC) and heterojunction materials 12, 13, 14, 15 (VO 2-VN, TiO 2-TiN, MoN-VN) are widely used in Li-S batteries and have achieved excellent electrochemical performance. In addition, researchers also found that accelerating the conversion rate of LiPSs to reduce the possibility of LiPSs shuttle is a proactive strategy to improve the performance of Li-S batteries. Various carbon-based materials and a series of polar adsorption materials have been used to prepare composite cathodes with sulfur due to the limitation of polysulfides 5, 6, 7. Since the development of Li-S batteries, researchers have made great efforts to explore different sulfur cathode host materials, and made a lot of gratifying progress. Unfortunately, due to the insulation of elemental sulfur, serious shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPSs), high reaction energy barrier and slow redox reaction kinetics, the actual capacity and long-term stability of Li-S batteries are restricted, which hinders the commercial progress of Li-S batteries 2, 3, 4. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as one of the most promising next-generation energy-storage systems due to its high theoretical capacity, abundant resources and environmental friendliness 1. I won’t go into these details in our examples, but I wanted to mention them. Further differences in the files result from structure and metadata. The popular 7z that has become fairly common in Windows environments also uses this algorithm. These tools primarily use the same compression algorithm, LZMA. txz, etc.: Tar also features built in support for xz, lzip, and more. It features a higher ratio of compression, but that increased shrinking power means it takes a bit longer to complete. tbz: This is the extension of an archive that has been compressed with Bz2. tgz: This is the extension of an archive that has been compressed with Gzip. It is only an archive and no compression is performed. Here are some of the common “tar files” you’ll find: I’ll show you how to do that later in this basic tar tutorial. While tar itself cannot compress files, you can use one of the common compression algorithms to compress the files while creating a tarball. Tarball is the common term used for a tar file. This is why you’ll often find software available in a ‘ tarball‘. A single file of 100 MB takes a lot less than transferring 100 files of 1 MB because of the file overhead. This saves network bandwidth, time and processing power while transferring the files. It creates a single file out of multiple files.
